Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma on Sunday met with KwaZulu-Natal Izinduna (headmen/headwomen) to discuss, among others, the long-standing issue of their remuneration.
The meeting was convened by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government and was attended by KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu and the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube.
“Izinduna had raised concerns about the proclamation determining their salaries, which was approved by the President following recommendations by the Commission on the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers, as they had not been paid by the provincial government,” the Presidency said on Sunday.
The meeting agreed that Izinduna should be recognised for the work they do in their traditional communities.
“The meeting also reiterated the need for a legislative review to ensure uniform national standards in the way traditional institutions and their representatives are recognised and supported by the democratically elected government,” said the Presidency. - SAnews.gov.za
