The goal of building a better South Africa is a partnership that requires the active participation of its citizens. A nation is not defined only by its institutions but by the people who give it meaning—their values, their contributions, and their commitment to the common good of the country. South Africa is shaped by the millions of people who call this country home and who continue to play their part in strengthening its social fabric.

The fight against corruption remains one of the major priorities of the Seventh Administration. Law enforcement agencies are acting swiftly to arrest, suspend or otherwise hold accountable those suspected of involvement in corruption. This commitment is re-enforced through a range of measures, including the ongoing judicial commission to investigate serious allegations of corruption, criminality and the infiltration of law enforcement agencies.

The month of July is dedicated to honouring the enduring legacy of our first democratic President Nelson Mandela, whose life was defined by selfless service to the people of South Africa. This annual observance is not just a symbolic tribute but is a reminder of the values that should guide every public servant.

The introduction of Lenacapavir for HIV prevention in South Africa represents the culmination of more than a decade of strategic leadership and health system strengthening led by the National Department of Health. South Africa has been one of the few countries globally to make antiretroviral-based pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) available as part of the Essential Medicines List and integrated within the country’s public primary healthcare (PHC) system.

The month of July is observed in South Africa as Mandela Month. Every year on 18 July, South Africa and the world honour the life and legacy of former President Nelson Mandela. The day, which coincides with Madiba's birthday, was officially proclaimed Nelson Mandela International Day by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 64/13, adopted on 10 November 2009, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the culture of peace, reconciliation, human rights and the promotion of social justice.

In support of the President’s vision, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has launched an ambitious campaign to plant 10 million trees in a single day on Heritage Day, 24 September 2026.

The baton for building and advancing South Africa has now been passed to the youth of today. While the generation of 1976 made immense sacrifices to secure the freedom and democracy that we enjoy, it is now the responsibility of the youth of 2026 to safeguard and strengthen that hard-won legacy through active citizenship and participation in democratic processes, particularly through voting.

As South Africa marks Youth Month, we are reminded that the defining challenge facing this generation is fundamentally different from what confronted the youth of 1976. While previous generations fought for political freedom, today's young people are engaged in a struggle for economic inclusion, opportunity and meaningful participation in the economy.

The lengthy delays between the planning of vital infrastructure and the commencement of construction are set to be significantly reduced. Government is implementing a major reform of its Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework to accelerate the delivery of key infrastructure including roads, hospitals, office accommodation, and water and sanitation systems.

As South Africa continues to face the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, pollution and biodiversity loss, our 2026/27 Budget is about more than financial allocations. Our 2026/27 Budget Vote – tabled recently in Parliament - is about improving people's lives, creating opportunities, protecting livelihoods and building a more sustainable future for all South Africans.

The pressing crisis of high unemployment in South Africa can no longer be addressed by government alone, it requires a collective effort from the public sector, private sector, labour, civil society and communities themselves. The time has come for young people to seize the power of small businesses and create employment opportunities in their own communities.

There are moments when time seems to stand still, when millions of hearts and minds are united by a shared experience. Our nation felt this during the 2010 FIFA World Cup when Siphiwe Tshabalala scored a spectacular opening goal for South Africa against Mexico.

As South Africa marks Youth Month in June, we are reminded that the future of the country depends on how effectively the nation supports, empower and invest in young people today.
