Komatipoort - An information campaign aimed at promoting road safety along the N4 toll route this festive season is underway.
Trans African Concessions (TRAC) spokesperson, Anita Heyl, said the campaign, which started on Friday, will target people travelling between Gauteng and Maputo through the N4.
"The aim of the information campaign is to make travelling along the N4 a pleasant experience while promoting road user safety and responsible driving behaviour," said Heyl.
She warned that driver fatigue was a contributing factor in many traffic accidents.
"It is every driver's responsibility to ensure that he or she stays alert for the duration of each journey," she said.
She said Mpumalanga, Swaziland and Mozambique were popular holiday destinations and were easily accessible through the N4 toll route.
"It is expected that traffic on the route will increase substantially during the festive season. Road users can expect peak traffic days from 7 - 8 December, 14 - 17 December, 21 - 24 December and from 4 to 7 January 2013," said Heyl.
Heyl further warned of heavy rains that may negatively affect traffic along the N4. She said the Highveld escarpment was prone to mist during the early hours and late at night.
"The company encourages drivers to take extra care during adverse weather conditions. In order to provide a quality road, TRAC continues to upgrade and maintain the route," she said.
TRAC said roadworks were currently being undertaken between Pretoria and Bronkhorstspruit in the Middelburg region, along Schoemanskloof en route Machadodorp to Mbombela, and between Schagen and Mbombela.
No construction work will take place between 15 December 2012 and 8 January 2013.
TRAC operates a 24-hour help desk, seven days per week to provide travellers with route information, traffic updates, emergency and accident response and roadside assistance.
"Road users are advised to stay in touch with the Help Desk before and during trips to ensure that they are aware of possible delays and any other incidents which may affect the flow of traffic en route," said Heyl.
