Over 5 000 letters received from Bafana supporters

Free State - The provincial Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) handed over 5 000 letters written in support of the national soccer squad, Bafana Bafana, for the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup to provincial Safa officials.

Friday was the last day of the campaign, of collecting letters of support, across the province that formed an opportunity for the public to show support to Bafana Bafana.

"The collections of letters across the province is part of the provincial calendar of events that have been rolled out and still yet to be done, in an effort to embrace and build excitement around the upcoming soccer tournaments," said provincial GCIS Director, Trevor Mokeyane. He said the letters had been collected across all five districts of the Free State and the response had been overwhelming.

According to Mokeyane, the provincial Fifa officials that were present to accept the bulk of letters at the outdoor campaign at the city centre would ensure the letters are received by the team. The collection of letters was also accompanied by message books that people could scribble a message of support in for the national squad.

Mokeyane could not hide his excitement about the response they had received across the province. "We have received a heart warming response and it truly shows that people are behind Bafana Bafana all the way."

Mokeyane's statement was evident, as most bystanders that marveled themselves in writing letters to the national team and wrote messages in the message book said they felt like they were making a mark in a historic moment in the country. They vowed their support for the national team, saying that South Africa is definitely winning the tournament.

GCIS hosted the campaign in collaboration with the Department of Water Affairs and Mangaung Local Municipality as the host city. The Department of Water Affairs said they would not have it any other way but to show support for the biggest tournament in Africa. They said that they were embracing the "working together we can do more" theme and had realised that such collaborations were very powerful.
