Pretoria - North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has conveyed condolences to the family of the five children who were killed in a fire at Ramatlabana village, near Mahikeng.
Police say the children, aged between three and 16 years, died when their house caught fire on Sunday. It is alleged that a 32-year-old woman left six children inside the house and went to a nearby tavern. Community members managed to rescue one of the children.
The woman was reportedly fetched from the tavern but collapsed on arrival at the scene and was taken to hospital.
“We send our heartfelt condolences to the family affected by this tragedy. We again appeal strongly to parents to be extra careful with the safety of those under their care,” said Premier Mahumapelo.
Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, who also conveyed her condolences to the family on Monday, urged the public to protect children wherever they are.
“It is very unfortunate and heart-breaking that children as young as these had to die in such a horrific manner, while there were parents who were supposed to be taking care of them and making sure that the children are protected,” said Minister Sisulu.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. The 32-year-old woman will be charged with negligence as soon as she is discharged from hospital. – SAnews.gov.za
