Soweto - Bafana Bafana got an extra boost ahead of their Confederations Cup encounter when President Jacob Zuma visited the team at its training camp in Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

The field erupted with loud cheers and applauds as the President made his way to the pitch where a large media contingent waited for him.

Decked in a yellow and green Bafana jersey, the President was welcomed by the team captain Aaron Mokoena and coach Joel Santana.

"I have come to assure you of our full support and I say this on behalf of the entire nation," said President Zuma.

South Africa will play against Iraq in a much anticipated opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup at Ellis Park stadium tomorrow.

"We took a decision that the World Cup should come to Africa and its here now in South Africa and I'm sure you are capable of winning the Confederations Cup," added President Zuma.

He also conveyed a message from the country's icon, former president Nelson Mandela.

"I met Madiba yesterday and his message to you, is that he 'is behind you all the way'," said the President.

Due to his age Madiba could not go to the stadium personally but his prayers and good wishes are with the team.

The President told the team that they have a responsibility to make the nation proud.

"I have been given a responsibility to lead government ... and you also carry a responsibility and the nation is looking up to you," President Zuma said.

He added: "We are going to show the world that South Africa is a unique country, I am confident as anything and I think the country is as confident more than ever in you."

Mr Mokoena presented the President with a Bafana jersey and jacket printed with his name on the back.

"We thank you very much for your visit and we promise we will do nothing else but perform and make the country proud," said Mr Mokoena.

Kick-off is at 4pm and fans have been urged to make their way to the stadium as early as 1pm.

Former President Thabo Mbeki, businessman and Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe are just some of the key figures who have confirmed their attendance.
