Pretoria - The Transport Department is gearing up for a series of safety campaigns ahead of the busiest period on South Africa's roads during the festive season.

As part of the annul Road Safety Strategy, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele will this weekend officially launch the 2009/10 Arrive Alive Festive Season Road Safety Plan.

Dubbed 'Operation Safer Festive Season', the event is expected to be attended by thousands of roleplayers in the transport industry including Transport MECs from various provinces and other senior government officials.

According to the department, Ndebele will also take part in the Siyabakhumbula / Reya ba Gopola Road Safety Campaign aimed at remembering those who have died in road crashes.

During the December holiday period, traffic volumes on the country's roads increases significantly and Operation Safer Festive Season is aimed at reducing road crashes, fatalities and injuries through enforcing lawful road user behaviour.

Law enforcement officers will be out in full force during this period and road users have been warned to obey the rules or face the full might of the law.
