Saturday, June 11, 2011

Johannesburg - The official funeral of struggle veteran Albertina Sisulu got underway at Orlando Stadium in Soweto a short while ago.

Thousands of mourners who were brought in by buses and trains are paying their respect to MaSisulu, who has been described by her party, the African National Congress (ANC) as a "nation builder and selfless leader."

The Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Magoba, led the service with a prayer, with Justice Minister Jeff Radebe and ANC national chairperson Baleka Mbete directing the programme.

Grandchildren Vuyisile, Vuyelwa, Nomvula and Pam Randal read the obituary of their grandmother in which they describe her life and times in and outside the ANC.

MaSisulu, the person to be detained the longest under house arrest in South Africa, had five children, Max, Lindiwe, Zwelakhe, Lungile and Nonkululeko. The family also adopted four other children.

MaSisulu died at her Johannesburg home at the age of 92 a week ago. She is to be laid to rest at Croesus cemetery this afternoon.
