R511 closed for heavy vehicles

Pretoria - Heavy vehicles have been barred from using the R511 Road (between Brits and Thabazimbi) in the North West. The road has been declared temporarily unsafe due to heavy rains.

Spokesperson of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Lesiba Kgwele, said soil around the bridge and drains across the Crocodile River were eroded by the flooding water from the Hartbeespoortdam.

"Until the road is assessed and declared safe by competent engineers, only light motor vehicles should use the road with caution to avoid further damage caused by the heavy rain to the road infrastructure and preventable accidents," he said.

While the situation is being closely monitored, heavy motor vehicles travelling from Brits towards Thabazimbi are advised to use the N4 Bakwena Platinum highway then connect into the R566 Pretoria to Sun City road at the Majakaneng off ramp. Alternatively, they should proceed towards Rustenburg to join the R510 Rustenburg-Thabazimbi road.

Meanwhile, Tshwane Emergency Services are closely monitoring the water levels at Lusaka informal settlement in Mamelodi following rains this morning.

Spokesperson for Community Safety, William Baloyi told BuaNews they have already put measures in place to evacuate destitute residents.

"We are closely monitoring the water levels at Lusaka informal settlement and if it continues to rain with the water level rising, we will be forced to evacuate residents to a safe area.

"When we visited the area on Tuesday, we urged shack dwellers to take precautionary measures by putting sand bags on the doors of their housing structures," he said.

Later this afternoon, Gauteng MEC for Health, Ntombi Mekgwe and Housing MEC Humphrey Memeza will visit areas affected by the floods across the province.
