Pretoria- A fire which broke out at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court earlier on Monday has resulted in 12 prisoners being trapped inside the court building.

The Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality confirmed on Monday that a blaze broke out in a storeroom in the court's basement at around noon. Firefighters are still on the scene trying to douse the building.

"Twelve prisoners are trapped at the holding cells of the court," spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Console Tleane, told BuaNews.

"The safety of the prisoners is of concern, rescuers are now inside the building," he said, adding that court officials and the general public were not inside the building at the time of the blaze.

He said an investigation would be launched into the cause of the fire
