Pres Zuma to lead SA delegation to AU summit

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma will this week lead the South African delegation to the 23rd Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly Summit in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, the Presidency said on Sunday.

The summit, to be held under the theme, "2014 Year of Agriculture and Food Security in Africa, Marking the 10th Anniversary of Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme," will be held from Wednesday to Friday in Malabo, said Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj in a statement.

“Agriculture has great potential to enable sustainable development, food security and job creation in Africa,” Maharaj said.

At the summit, the leaders will, also amongst others, consider the status of peace and security in Africa, the implementation of NEPAD projects, the African Peer Review Mechanism, the African Common Position on the Post-2015 Development Agenda as well as the report of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change.

The Summit will also deliberate on the finalisation of the Agenda 2063 Continental Framework, as part of the vision of Africa in the next 50 years.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane is already in Malobo to participate in the Executive Council of the AU which takes place ahead of the Heads of State Summit.

President Zuma will also be accompanied by Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Minister and Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration, Collins Chabane and Ayanda Dlodlo, Minister of State Security, David Mahlobo, Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ Senzeni Zokwana.

According to Maharaj, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa would be Acting President while President Zuma was out of the country. – SAnews.gov.za
