Mbombela - Mpumalanga residents have been warned to expect heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday.

The provincial co-operative governance and traditional affairs department issued the warning on Thursday.

"These heavy rains are expected over the south and western Mpumalanga Highveld,” said department spokesman Simphiwe Kunene.

He said the department had instructed all municipalities to be on full alert and on standby.

"The heavy rains could result in an increase of dam and river levels thus making small streams and rivers very dangerous. People must move away from river banks and they must avoid crossing full rivers and over flowing bridges," he said.

The department also urged parents to ensure their children don't play along streams and rivers.

"The department requests all communities to take precautions especially those who are staying in low-lying areas. A special caution is issued to all learners on their way to and from school not to cross full rivers and bridges," said Kunene.

Road users were also urged to be "extremely cautious" as roads are wet and there may be rockfalls in some areas.

In case of any possible flooding residents are advised to call the Disaster Management toll free number 0800 202 507. - SAnews.gov.za
