Minister to tackle social ills in Limpopo

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Pretoria - Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini is expected to tackle social ills facing the community of Mookgopong in Limpopo.

Dlamini will talk to the community about the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse.

As part of the launch of Social Development Month, the minister will engage the community in dialogue with the view to develop a community action plan to tackle prevailing socio-economic challenges identified in the area.

The community of Mookgopong has a high number of families with malnourished children.

Dlamini will also visit an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre and the families of some children from the centre.

During her visit, she will be accompanied by officials from the National Development Agency (NDA) and officials from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), who will come up with an intervention to fight malnutrition.

Dlamini will also visit the Ubuntu Project for poverty alleviation, which has the potential to fight poverty in the area.

The Department of Social Development (DSD), SASSA, NDA and the Waterberg District Municipality, have already sent officials to profile households that need assistance or government's intervention.

"This is part of our 'Taking DSD to Communities' Campaign, which seeks to strengthen and mobilize communities through promotion of constructive engagement between the department, its agencies as well as communities," the department said.

"This is also part of our efforts to build strong families that will produce upstanding citizens that contribute towards their own development, in line with the Green Paper on Families that was approved by Cabinet recently," said the department.

SASSA will be delivering services to the people at the event. In particular, the priority will be registering children under the age of 18 who qualify for the Child Support Grant but are not yet on the system.

There are about two million poor children in South Africa who qualify for the grant and are not registered.

This year's theme for Social Development Month is, 'Working together to build a caring and sustainable community for all.'

Dlamini will be accompanied by her deputy Maria Ntuli and Limpopo MEC for Health and Social Development Dikeledi Magadzi.
