Pretoria - KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, on Wednesday called on athletes who want to participate in the Mandela Day Marathon to register by August 11.

The deadline for the Mandela Day Marathon had been extended due to the large number of athletes who have shown an interest in participating in the marathon.

“We have received entries from some of the world’s finest long-distance athletes. We also expect this marathon to yield great benefits for the local economy of uMgungundlovu, as over 10 000 athletes and their families will descend on the capital city,” MEC Dube-Ncube said.

The marathon will be an occasion to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of President Mandela’s arrest and takes place on August 31.

It is expected to be broadcast live on SABC.

“Even our own Comrades Marathon champion, Bongani Mthembu, will be participating in this marathon. This is why we are confident that this marathon will be a huge success,” said MEC Dube-Ncube.
