Girl Geek campaign to open doors, change lives

Monday, May 21, 2018

The Girl Geek campaign, which seeks to encourage young girls from disadvantaged communities to be involved in science, technology, engineering and maths, will be launched in Johannesburg today.

The campaign is run by Ikusasa LeAfrica Foundation (ILAF) and Africa Teen Geek who have partnered to inspire children to get involved in technology by teaching them computer science and programming.

This year, the partnership will focus on recruiting young girls into the programme, under the Girl Geek campaign.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Zweli Mkhize is expected to deliver a keynote speech at the launch.

“Information Technology is at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and encouraging our children to embrace technology at a young age is a step closer to solving most of our developmental problems,” Mkhize said.

As part of the programme, children learn about robotics, websites, video games and other technologies which culminate in individual projects where they build their own products to solve societal problems. - SAnews.gov.za
