Johannesburg - Thousands of mourners, as well as foreign dignitaries, are continuing to spill into FNB Stadium to pay their last respects to the late former President Nelson Mandela.
“The stadium so far has 30 000 people and the traffic is slow around the stadium,” Johannesburg Metro Police Department Chief Superintendent, Wayne Minnaar, told SAnews on Tuesday.
He said the traffic flow on Randshow, N1 and Nasrec Rd was not heavy.
Authorities earlier said that there were teams in place monitoring the crowds and when the stadium was at capacity, mourners would be diverted to overflow areas. SAPS, Tshwane Metro Police, marshals and government officials are ensuring the smooth flow of people.
There were also public viewing areas across the provinces where people could gather to watch broadcasts of the National Memorial Service.
The crowds have taken up the upper blocks in the stands in a bid to avoid the wet weather.
The formal programme is expected to get underway at 11am, with the National Anthem and addresses by various dignitaries - SAnews.gov.za
