Crime fighting TV programme to be launched

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Pretoria - Police Minister, Nathi Mthethwa, and his Deputy, Fikile Mbalula, are to launch a crime fighting television programme on Thursday.

The programme, When Duty Calls, hopes to build on the success of Police File which assisted the police in uncovering dangerous crimes with the help of communities.

The new and revamped programme will assist the police by giving the community information about missing persons, reporting crimes and breaking the silence on abuse cases.

"The police hope to build on these successes and ensure that crime is reduced in our country," said the ministry in a statement on Wednesday.

The launch is divided in two phases and will begin with a police roadblock in Diepsloot where police management will join local police in a crime search exercise. The police will also encourage communities to assist police in fighting crime.

In the second phase of the launch, the minister will deliver a keynote address, accompanied by Mbalula and the National Police Commissioner, Bheki Cele.

The programme is expected to be aired on SABC 2 soon.
