Pretoria – KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu says an official request will be sent to President Jacob Zuma to set up a commission of enquiry following the discovery of mass graves on Glenroy farm in Dududu.
The bodies of prison labourers were buried in mass graves on three sites on Glenroy farm. The owner of the farm is dead and the farm was sold to the Illovo Sugar Group almost 30 years ago.
Premier Mchunu visited the graves on Monday, where he made an appeal to all those who may know anything, particularly the conditions of workers at the time, to come forward and shed light on what transpired.
“This will also help our nation to move forward and heal as we seek closure to our painful past. It is not going to be easy to identify who these victims were and to find their next of kin. We thus appeal for patience and cooperation with all agencies that will be involved.
“At this stage, we do not know the identities of those remains and we do not know their causes of death. What we know is that it is the right of a new born to have a name that will be his or her identity. Even in death, one has a right to identity and to be laid to rest in dignity,” Premier Mchunu said. – SAnews.gov.za
