Bafana 2010 ticket sales concern Jordaan

Johannesburg - Tickets for matches featuring Bafana Bafana are not selling well and this continues to worry organisers of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The national team has set a record by becoming the first host nation not to feature in the top10 selling matches.

"Usually the hosts are the ones who sell most tickets but Bafana Bafana does not even feature in the top 10 and it's a concern," Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chief Executive Officer Danny Jordaan said on Tuesday.

An initiative by FIFA and the LOC will see about 120 000 tickets for the tournament being distributed for free with 40 000 going to the construction workers who are helping build the stadia countrywide.

This is just one of the initiatives to encourage local participation and ensure that as many South Africans as possible are part of the historical event.

Popular sports clothing label Adidas will also sponsor 15 000 tickets that will be distributed to kids in schools around the country.

Jordaan said more will be done in the next few months to encourage locals to buy more Bafana game tickets as this is important to ensure that the team receives all the psychological boost it needs.
