Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has decided not to appoint a Commission of Inquiry to probe the match-fixing allegations involving matches Bafana Bafana played before the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
On Friday, the Presidency said President Zuma has been advised by the world football governing body, FIFA, that there is currently a pending preliminary investigation on the same matter.
“President Jacob Zuma has decided not to appoint a Commission of Inquiry to investigate, amongst other things, the alleged match fixing and manipulation of soccer outcomes in relation to Bafana Bafana's pre 2010-World Cup international friendly matches,” said the Presidency.
In 2012, the FIFA investigation team was in South Africa to probe the match fixing allegations of Bafana Bafana's 2010 FIFA World Cup warm-up matches played against Guatemala and Colombia.
In April last year, the South African Football Association (Safa) had urged government to expedite the establishment of an independent judicial commission of inquiry to investigate match-fixing allegations.
Bafana beat Colombia 2-1 in a match dominated by penalties in May 2010. It took penalty kicks from Teko Modise and Katlego Mphela to seal Bafana's victory while Giovanni Moreno registered Columbia's single goal, also through a penalty.
Ten days before the kick-off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Bafana beat Guatemala 5-nil in a match played at Peter Mokaba stadium in Limpopo. - SAnews.gov.za
