Pretoria – The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) is today hosting Africa Public Service Day (APSD) celebrations in Gauteng, with emphasis on women empowerment, innovation and accessible service delivery.

The celebrations, which is being held at Kwa-Thema Municipal Hall in Ekurhuleni, began on Monday. The DPSA said they will conclude today, with government, public servants, public service institutions, academia and citizens in South Africa and the continent at large celebrating and commemorating the 2015 APSD.

This year, the APSA celebrations are held under the theme “The role of Public Service in women empowerment, innovation and accessible service delivery”.

The annual national APSD celebrations commenced on Monday and ends today, and the biennial continental event started from 19 June and ends today at Brazzaville in Republic of Congo.

“The commemorations aim at discovering innovations, rewarding excellence, motivating public servants to do more with passion and courtesy, promoting professionalism and respectable image of the public service, enhancing trust in government, strengthening the collection, documenting and sharing of best practices with possible replication of best practices locally and across the African Continent,” said DPSA.

DPSA said the celebrations seek to provide a platform for public servants to reflect on the progress and successes, challenges and possible solutions in ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in delivering quality services to all.

The celebrations also seek to give recognition to public service innovations and make known the importance of the public services, their positive contribution and benefits to public servants and different diverse stakeholders.

“The celebrations provide space to motivate and encourage public servants to continue going beyond the call of duty, come up with new initiatives and innovations whilst obtaining feedback from the citizenry on the public services rendered.

“They further provide an invaluable opportunity for public servants to promote values such as professionalism, accountability, responsiveness, ethics and performance in the delivery of public service,” said the DPSA. - SAnews.gov.za
