Pretoria - Over 700 suspects were arrested at the weekend for various crimes in Gauteng, police said on Sunday.

Police had conducted a number of anti-crime operations around the province, including road blocks, stop and searches and tracking down of suspects wanted for outstanding cases.

“Seven hundred and twenty-nine suspects were arrested over the weekend for various crimes in Benoni, Carltonville, Germiston, Katlehong, Krugersdorp, Johannesburg, Orlando and Springs,” provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

The operations saw the seizure of 15 firearms,  the arrest of at least 73 suspects for drug-related crimes and about 35 suspects were arrested for drunken driving.

The recovered firearms will be taken for ballistic examination as they may have been involved in serious and violent crimes, Dlamini said. – SAnews.gov.za
