Police arrest 434 in anti-crime operations

A total of 434 people were arrested by South African Police Service (SAPS) officers in Gauteng for various offences during crime combating operations at the weekend.

The integrated and intelligence-driven operations from Friday to Sunday morning included searches for wanted suspects which culminated in the arrest of suspects for crimes such as murder, rape, possession of unlicensed firearms and robbery.

“Ninety of these suspects were arrested in Johannesburg West, while 118 were arrested in the West Rand during roadblocks and stop-and-search operations. Five suspects were arrested in Soweto, among them one of the suspects was charged with the rape of an 11-year old girl,” Gauteng police said.

As police continue to crack down on business and house robberies, Ekurhuleni East Cluster officers arrested more than 78 suspects for various crime such as theft, murder, damage to property, housebreaking and armed robbery.

In Tshwane North, more than 143 suspects for crimes that are problematic to the community such as drinking and driving, possession of drugs, possession of dangerous weapon, shoplifting and assault grievous bodily harm.

A total of unlicensed firearms were recovered, and stolen property recovered.

All suspects will be appearing in courts around Gauteng this morning.
