Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma was among the regional leaders who participated in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government in Mbabane, Swaziland, on Saturday.
The summit was scheduled to discuss the industrialisation report of the Ministerial Task Force on Regional Economic Integration.
The summit further discussed food security following the Fall Army Worm outbreak currently affecting crop production and food security in the region.
President Zuma on Friday participated in the SADC Double Troika Summit, which was convened to receive and discuss a progress report on the implementation of SADC decisions in relation to the political situation in Lesotho and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
In his capacity as SADC facilitator in Lesotho, South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa gave a report to the summit on Lesotho.
The extraordinary summit was preceded by the SADC Council of Ministers’ meeting and the SADC Ministerial Retreat held under the theme ‘The SADC We Want’. Deliberations at the retreat focused on three thematic areas: SADC vision progress, challenges and prospects; SADC’s institutional capacity to deliver on its mandate and resource mobilisation.
President Zuma was accompanied by Deputy President Ramaphosa, the Ministers of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, State Security David Mahlobo, Trade and Industry Rob Davies and the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Luwellyn Landers.
Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor was Acting President while both the President and Deputy President were outside the country on official duty. – SAnews.gov.za
