Pretoria - Soccer fans have been encouraged to use public transport to get to the international friendly match between Bafana Bafana and five-time world champions, Brazil, at FNB stadium on Wednesday.
Addressing reporters in Johannesburg on Friday, Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar said due to the congestion experienced during high profile matches, fans should try to avoid using private vehicles.
“We want members of the public to make use of the transport options available to FNB Stadium. We also want to ask the public to arrive early at the stadium,” he said, adding that strict road closures would be in force within the Nasrec precinct.
Minnaar said illegal parking, including pavement parking, would be strictly regulated and heavy fines would be imposed on motorists who failed to adhere to this rule.
“We are saying to the fans, use public transport, it will be cost effective, reliable and very efficient - there is limited pre-paid public parking within the Nasrec precinct,” he said.
Rea Vaya has assured spectators that the park-and-ride services will be running on the day of the match and the public can make use of facilities at Constitutional Hill, Metro Centre, Westgate, the University of Johannesburg, Kingsway and the Indingilizi Rea Vaya Bus terminal.
Metrorail will also provide four trains departing from the Park Station from 4pm to 6pm. The trains will depart soon after the match from Nasrec. A return ticket will cost R20 and will include secured car parking next to Park Station.
The pick-up and drop off points for taxis will be at Noord Street, Bree Street Taxi Rank, Baragwanath, Eldorado, Dobsonville Police Station, Meadowlands Police Station, Phefeni Taxi Rank, Cross Road Taxi Rank and Dube Station Taxi Rank.
Tickets for the match are going for R50, R100 and R200 for the upper, lower and middle tiers. Gates at the Calabash stadium will open at 4pm.
