Minister, unions meet over strike action

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Pretoria - Public Service and Administration Minister Richard Baloyi will later today meet with public service unions in a bid to prevent further unions embarking on strike action.

Today, public servants affiliated to the Public Service Association (PSA) which has around 200 000 members, downed tools after rejecting government's offer of a 6.5 percent wage increase across the board and an increase in the housing allowance from R500 to R620.

PSA members could be joined by Cosatu and the Independent Labour Caucus which represents around 1.3 million public servants, depending on the outcome of today's meeting.

Government's new wage offer, details of which have not yet been released, will be tabled at the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council later today.

Government and the unions reached deadlock in June after the parties failed to reach an agreement with the salary increases. The partied agreed to postpone any strike action until after the World Cup.

Yesterday, the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) indicated that they will be serving a notice to the employer by wherein the employer has seven days to better the offer in order to avert the strike.

Sadtu, together with Cosatu affiliated unions, are demanding an 8.6 percent salary increase, R1 000 housing allowance, equalisation of medical aid subsidy and the implementation date for the increase to be 1 April.
