Sunday, April 3, 2011

Pretoria - South Africa will on Monday host the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance of the Republic of Korea by convening a conference on Domestic Resource Mobilisation in Cape Town

South Africa chairs ATAF, though the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

The four-day International Tax Administration Meeting is expected to be addressed by Deputy Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene.

The conference will bring together heads and senior officials of African tax administrations and Ministries of Finance, representatives of the Korean Government, the African Development Bank (AfDB) and other global institutions, representatives from Korean and African business as well as several academics working in the tax arena to discuss challenges to African tax policy and administration.

Established in November 2009, ATAF has made the promotion of domestic resource mobilisation in Africa a key focus of its work. ATAF, which has 31 member tax authorities on the continent, views domestic resource mobilisation as vital to ending Africa's dependency on foreign aid and debt, as well as strengthening good governance.

Issues to come under consideration include the role of industry in Korea's economic development, building sustainable African industries and African tax policy. - BuaNews
