Pretoria - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa will be attending the 79th Interpol General Assembly, held in Doha, Qatar, today.

The senior law enforcement officials and security experts from around the world will meet to discuss a range of policing issues, including terrorism, organized crime, security at major global events such as the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and the enhanced use of Interpol's Red Notices to locate and arrest fugitives worldwide.

The General Assembly will elect the organisation's Executive Committee, with each member country represented having one vote.

The theme for this year's event is 'Connecting Police for a Safer World'.

During Mthethwa's absence, State Security Minister Dr Siyabonga Cwele will be the acting Minister of Police.
