Heavy security at Nairobi's Kasarani stadium ahead of swearing-in

Nairobi - Heavy security has been deployed at The Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi, ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto for their second term in office later today.

Heavily armed military officers were among other security personnel seen screening people at every corner of the stadium to ensure that all is set for the event. The military officers on Tuesday morning finalised their swearing-in rehearsals in a parade drill, which will see the military mount a guard of honour to President Kenyatta.

Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua, has assured that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of all Kenyans and guests, who will be attending the event.

More than 20 foreign leaders, including Presidents Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Botswana’s Ian Khama, Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, John Pombe Magufuli of Tanzania, Edgar Lungu of Zambia, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, Namibia’s Hage Geingob, Faure Gnassingbé of Togo, Mohamed Farmajo of Somalia and Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn of Ethiopia are expected to be present.

Countries which will send other senior officials include South Africa, Nigeria, Guinea, Angola, Congo Brazzaville , Burundi, Yemen, Oman, Srilanka, Qatar, Palestine, Portugal, Fiji and Algeria.

Prince Amin, who will represent the Aga Khan, as well as special envoys from Japan, China, the Holy See, Serbia, Eritriea, Britain and Ukraine will also attend the ceremony. - NNN-KBC
