Zim documentation process in the spotlight

Monday, October 4, 2010

Pretoria - The international community is expected to get an update on Monday, on South Africa's efforts to document illegal Zimbabweans living in the country.

Home Affairs Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, will present a progress report on the Zimbabwean documentation process when she addresses the 61st Session of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva, Switzerland.

South Africa began the process of documenting Zimbabweans on 20 September. The process intends to regularise the stay of Zimbabwean nationals in the country, who have until the end of the year to apply for valid study, work and business permits.

The Department of Home Affairs has also offered amnesty to those Zimbabweans who hand in South African identity documents and permits obtained fraudulently.

During her address to the UNHCR meeting, the minister is also expected to discuss the country's efforts to review its immigration policy which aims to separate economic migrants from genuine asylum seekers.

Other issues that will come up for deliberation during the meeting include the challenging issue of conflict; globally displaced populations, natural disasters and UNHCR reform, the department said.
