Pretoria - On this year’s World Photography Day, Communications Minister Faith Muthambi has congratulated all South African photographers who have played a pivotal role in archiving the history of South Africa.

The occasion of World Photography Day, also known as World Photo Day, is observed annually on 19 of August. It celebrates the passion of photography in the communities.

“Photographers played a pivotal role in the struggle to free South Africa from apartheid. Through their lenses, they documented South Africa’s liberation struggle and depicted to the outside world the reality that faced the oppressed in this country.

“The photography of the likes of Alf Khumalo, Peter Magubane, Sam Nzima and Ken Oosterbroek gave us iconic images that will forever be etched in our memories,” she said.

Today photography continues to play an important role and is an essential part of promoting an active citizenry and fostering social cohesion among all South Africans. – SAnews.gov.za
