Pretoria - The safety and security of women in the mining sector will top the agenda when the Mineral Resources Department convenes its Women's Month lekgotla on Thursday and Friday.
The Women-in-Mining Lekgotla will be hosted in Boksburg under the theme 'Safety, security and comfort for women in mining: Towards a programme of action for women by women', and it will see the convergence of key women mine workers, operational managers and executives to map gender sensitive guidelines for the department as it seeks to address issues of safety and transformation in the industry.
The department says it convenes this lekgotla alive to the reality that women continue to face discrimination in the workplace.
Central to the lekgotla's objectives is the continued call for meaningful transformation, not only at ownership level, but also with matters related to culture and attitudes in the workplace.
The department hopes the lekgotla will provide a platform for women to share their workplace experiences and best practices that their respective companies have implemented, which have yielded results.
The two-day meeting will culminate in a gala dinner that will be hosted in honour of Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who was recently appointed as the first woman Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
The gala dinner will also celebrate South African fashion and jewellery design.
