Pretoria - Two officers were shot and injured when two suspects fired at them at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Gauteng Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Khensani Magoai, said two suspects were due to appear in court today.

As they were escorted out of the cells into the courtroom, they produced guns and shot at a police officer and a court orderly.

The policeman was due to testify in a trial.

“The officer was shot in the upper body, while the court orderly was shot in the lower body,” Magoai said.

The officers were then rushed to a local hospital.

Prior to the shooting, the suspects were facing charges of house robbery and possession of unlincensed firearms.

After shooting the officers, the suspects escaped in a hijacked Ford Icon, which was parked outside the court. They later abandoned the vehicle in Atteridgeville.

They then hijacked a red VW Polo and are still on the run.

The court is now operating as normal, Magoai said. – SAnews.gov.za
