Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has joined music lovers in expressing shock over the sudden passing of gospel singer Sfiso Ncwane.
The 37-year-old multi-award winning star died on Monday morning at the Fourways Life Hospital of suspected kidney failure.
President Jacob Zuma has expressed deep sadness and extended his heartfelt condolences on the Ncwane family.
"The passing of Mr Ncwane is a massive loss for the country. His music touched the hearts of millions of people. He was one of the best gospel artists that the country has ever produced, and he left us at such a young age. We are deeply saddened. May his soul rest in peace,” President Zuma said on Monday.
Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa also paid tribute to Ncwane, whom he described as a man who gave his heart and soul to carrying the faith through music and who was influential, inspired hope and encouraged new generations.
“Sfiso Ncwane grew from humble beginnings into an artist of great stature and great power. He was truly a giant in gospel music, even at a tender age. He had an abundance of creative spirit. He sang isiCathamiya and gospel songs even as a child.
“He earned the respect of his community by playing at weddings, in churches, at funerals and community events. It was clear from the start that his would be a life of dedication to his art, and devotion through spreading the word of God,” Minister Mthethwa said.
One of his biggest successes was being the first gospel singer to win Song of the Year at the South African Music Awards in 2013 with his hit song Kulungile Baba.
Kulungile Baba recognised that everything that happens does so for a reason, perhaps consoling and preparing the nation for his departure. – SAnews.gov.za
