Pretoria – Law enforcement officers have been out in their numbers since the beginning of the festive season in an effort to reduce road fatalities.
“About 600 drivers were arrested for various offences including overloading (239), speeding (18) and other offences (349),” said the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
More than 165 600 vehicles have been stopped and checked since 1 December.
More than 3 000 vehicles were impounded and 336 were suspended.
Nearly 10 000 vehicles were screened for alcohol use while 194 were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The highest speed that has been recorded was in the Free State where a motorist was caught driving at 211 kilometres an hour in a 120 kilometre zone.
“All drivers are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure all passengers in their vehicles use seat belts.
“Failure to do this is an offence and a driver will be held responsible for each passenger that is not buckled up,” RTMC said.
The agency said a number of people have been thrown out of vehicles during collisions this weekend. – SAnews.gov.za
