Pretoria - The Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Pam Tshwete, has handed over the title deeds of 7 504 hectares of land to the Ba Phalaborwa Ba Maseke community.

The land, which borders the Kruger National Park, was part of a successful land claim settlement by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform.

The Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform, Gugile Nkwinti, had approved the restoration of 7 504 hectares of land worth R159.3 million to the community as well as approved a financial compensation award of R120 million.

A total of R20 million was paid to 485 households and the remaining R100 million will be used for community development projects within Maseke village, where the claimants are currently residing under Chief Malatji.

The financial compensation award was in respect of land that was not viable for restoration due to over-capitalisation and high value developments.

Spokesperson Nicolas Magada said the department had on Tuesday handed over the title deeds to the community to confirm its ownership of the land.

“Today, we are confirming the ownership of the 7 504 hectares of land, which was bought at a cost of R159 million. The deputy minister is here to address the community and hand over the title deeds,” he said.

He said the department was happy that the community had already started developing the land, which has game farming and eco-tourism projects. – SAnews.gov.za
