Three 'bank followers' in court

Friday, December 29, 2017

The three men believed to be behind a spate of armed robberies in Gauteng are due to appear before the Alberton Magistrate’s Court this morning.

The three suspects -- aged 30, 27 and 22 -- from Tembisa, are allegedly involved in a chain of robberies where they would follow victims from banks and rob them at gunpoint.

They were arrested on Wednesday by the multi-agency crack team spearheaded by the Hawks’ Tactical Operation and backed by Crime Intelligence, the SAPS Special Task Force, the Gauteng Saturation Team, Pretoria Dog Unit, the SAPS Airwing and Tracker.

“The trio were allegedly seen moving around different shopping malls in and around Johannesburg. They allegedly decided to drive towards the Alberton area where a decision was taken to take them down,” the Hawks said on Thursday.

The team seized two unlicensed firearms and the car.

It was later discovered that the car had been hijacked in Norkem Park earlier this month.

Investigations are still ongoing to link the seized firearms and suspects to other crimes. - SAnews.gov.za
