Search on for new N West municipality name

Thursday, February 2, 2017

Pretoria – The process to find a name for the recently amalgamated Tlokwe/Ventersdorp NW405 Municipality in the North West is still ongoing.

Tlokwe and Ventersdorp were amalgamated after a thorough public participation process facilitated by the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) after the 2016 Local Government Elections.

The Department of Local Government and Human Settlements in the North West says thus far, public participation in the naming process, which got underway on Tuesday, has been encouraging.

The provincial department said the turnout has been good and the different racial groups were reflected in the attendees.

The process is expected to take a period of two months to ensure that community members are given ample opportunity to get involved.

"The department has a responsibility within the context of Section 154 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa to support the municipality to run a smooth process of public engagement and succeed.

“The new name of the municipality must ultimately be a community product that everybody can be proud of," said the MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements in the North West, Galaletsang Gaolaolwe.

The MEC further called on all affected communities and stakeholders to sustain good attendance and participate meaningfully in the process of finding a new name for the municipality. – SAnews.gov.za
