Pretoria – Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Fanie Masemola has expressed shock and outrage at the murder of a toddler in Ha-Mutsha village, just outside Thohoyandou.
According to reports, community members on Friday night discovered a 30-year-old woman allegedly hacking one of her three-month-old baby twins with an axe.
The residents alerted the police who responded to the scene.
According to police, the residents managed to rescue the other twin and detain the mother until the police arrived.
The injured twin was rushed to Tshilidzini hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The motive for the killing is unknown and the suspect will make her first court appearance at Vuwani Magistrate Court on Monday, said police.
Last week, a 20-year-old mother was arrested for allegedly strangling her 20-month old baby and throwing the baby girl in a pit toilet in the Mbekwana village, Letsitele, just outside Tzaneen.
Unfortunately, by the time the police arrived and rescued the girl from the stinking, cold toilet pit, the baby was already dead.
The mother, Christina Makhanani Baloyi, is still in custody and will apply for bail on 2 June at the Ritavi Magistrate Court.
“I am deeply saddened and this madness has to stop. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the young one and I promise … that we will do everything to ensure these women stay in jail for a long time,” said Masemola. - SAnews.gov.za
