SAPS appeals for information on death of girls

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Midrand – The SAPS has appealed to anyone with information on the murder of two girls, whose bodies were found this morning in an open field in Braamfisherville, Dobsonville, to come forward.

The bodies of two school girls aged 15 and 16 years-old were found in an open field near Extension 2. The two girls were dressed in the school uniform of George Khosa Secondary School.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Major-General Tebello Mosikili, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for detective services in Gauteng, said the 15-year-old was positively identified by her mother while the second girl is still unknown.

“They were found with cuts to the body and neck. Three black candles and two new razor blades were found on the scene. Crime scene experts are currently combing the scene for evidence. The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) unit will do the investigation,” said Mosikili.

No arrests have been made in connection with the murders. The next of kin of the second girl has not yet been located or informed.

In order to establish whether the murders are related to ritual killings, Mosikili said a team of occult expert investigators have been dispatched to the crime scene. If any occult related practices occurred, the experts would pick it up and report on what happened, Mosikili said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10 111 or SMS information to Crime Line at 32211. Callers may remain anonymous if they so wish.

Government has also expressed its deep outrage on the deaths of the two girls.

Acting GCIS CEO, Phumla Williams said: “Criminal activities in any form will not be tolerated in the country. We have come a long way as a country in protecting the right to life. Government has put in place systems such as the Constitution, supporting legislation, policies and programmes aimed at fighting crime in our country”.

Just last week, the Palm Ridge High Court was successful in turning the wheels of justice in a ‘satanic ritual’ murder trial and sentenced Robin Harwood and Lindon Wagner to 20-years and 25 plus 18-years for Kirsty Theologo’s murder and attempting to kill her 14-year-old friend.

South Africans are therefore encouraged to play their part by reporting any criminal activity to their local police stations.

“Government is confident that law enforcement officials will leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to book.

“Working together with government, communities should act against perpetrators of violence and ensure that justice through official platforms continues to prevail,” said Williams.

Search underway for Diepsloot child’s parents

Meanwhile, police have released an ID sketch of a three-year-old girl found under a bridge in Diepsloot on Saturday, in a bid to find the parents of the missing child.

The body of the unknown child was found under the bridge at R511 and the Juskei River. The body was already decomposed with some parts, including lips and fingers already bitten allegedly by crabs.

The little girl was dressed in a pink tracksuit top, blue top and jeans with no shoes. A pink striped sock was found few meters away from the body and no missing child/person was reported at Diepsloot or surrounding police stations.

However, police have ruled out any link between the death of the three-year-old and other recent child murders in the area.

According to the police, there was no physical evidence of sexual assault of the child, no evidence of strangulation or physical assault and the body was still intact, when it was recovered.

Mosikili reported that the preliminary results of the post mortem conducted on Tuesday suggest that the girl was not strangled, nor were there signs of any sexually molestation or physical injuries to the body.

“The possibility of drowning cannot be ruled out at this stage; an inquest is underway. A request for a toxicology report was also made to establish the cause of death which is inconclusive at this stage,” said Mosikili.

The child or parents of the family is still unknown. Mosikili said the preliminary investigation has led the team to a Roodepoort family, who indicated that the body is not that of their child.

“DNA samples were taken from the mother who was at the time of the identification in Limpopo. The case has been prioritised and the results are awaited.”
