SANRAL denies CEO's R1.1m increase

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Pretoria – The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has refuted claims in recent reports that the salary of CEO Nazir Ali was increased by R1.1 million.

SANRAL said the increase was R332 000, as outlined in its annual report.

Communications manager of SANRAL Vusi Mona said weekend reports that Ali’s salary had been increased by R1.1 million were “simply mischievous”.

“It is also important for the sake of fairness that the context in which salary increases occur, are stated. The CEO’s salary is determined by SANRAL’s board and approved by the Minister of Transport.

“This meant that his annual salary of R1 563 000 has now been adjusted to R1 895 000. The increase is only R332 000. To add in that he received a bonus this year and not last year and simply add that to his salary, is at best an indication of basic misunderstanding. A bonus is not and never has been part of a salary,” he explained.

He said the misleading reports about the CEO’s salary were detracting from the achievements of SANRAL such as the quality of the national roads, the high-level engineering, the solid administration and SANRAL’s financial clean bill of health.  – SAnews.gov.za
