Pretoria - Communications Minister Faith Muthambi has commended the SABC for wrapping up the nation’s one month-long Freedom Month celebrations with a live broadcast of an international boxing tournament, which will be aired live on SABC 2 tonight at 9:30pm.
The tournament will take place at Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Arena in Seshego outside Polokwane. It will also be broadcast on SABC radio stations.
Three of the four heavyweights in boxing -- the WBA, IBF and WBO -- will all be involved in the tournament. The main highlight of the programme is the fight between IBO welterweight titleholder Tsiko "Cruel Junior" Mulovhedzi and Mexico's Jesus Gurrola.
“The SABC has a strong radio and television presence in South Africa and has become the voice for millions. We want to applaud the SABC for pushing nation building through sport by wrapping up Freedom Month with the live broadcast of this much awaited boxing match.
“We are appealing not only to boxing enthusiasts but to all television viewers to stay glued to their television sets and enjoy this boxing action on SABC 2 tonight at 9:30pm,” said Minister Muthambi.
During the tournament, Gideon “Hardcore” Buthelezi will defend his IBO junior bantamweight world title championship against the Dominican Republic’s Diego Luis Picherdo. The WBA junior lightweight title match will be between Limpopo’s very own Malcom Klassen and Mexican Leonilo Ruiz Miranda.
The reigning national junior flyweight champion, Bongani Silila and Namibian Japhet Uutoni will fight for a vacant WBO international belt. Prince Ndlovu and Sydney "The Skeleton" Maluleke will battle it out for a vacant IBF Africa featherweight belt. - SAnews.gov.za
