Pretoria - Plans to commemorate Youth Day are in full swing, says Cabinet.
South Africans will commemorate Youth Day on 16 June under the theme "Together We Can Do More to Build Infrastructure and Fight Youth Unemployment, Poverty and Inequality".
The day recognises the brave youth who on 16 June 1976, stood up against the apartheid government's Bantu education laws. It further honours the hundreds of school children who died on that day - a day that changed the course of the country's history.
Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation, Collins Chabane, said on Friday that the official event, which will be presided over by President Jacob Zuma, will be held in Wolfson, KwaZakhele Stadium, in Port Elizabeth.
June will also see the commemoration of the 10th World Day Against Child Labour. The day will put a spotlight on the rights of children and how they can be protected from child labour.
Chabane said: "Cabinet calls on all sectors of society to partner with government and 'Play Your Part' in removing this scourge which robs our young leaders of their rights."
The month will further see the celebrations around Environment Month under the theme: "Green Economy: Does It Include You?"
Chabane said the Department of Environmental Affairs would prominently communicate interventions which will ensure that youth are part of the green economy.
Meanwhile, Cabinet had also noted the name change of the Voortrekker Museum to uMsunduzi Museum to reflect the inclusive heritage of Pietermaritzburg.
"This change also reflects the fact that the museum is no longer a single-theme centre but a multi-themed institution catering for all cultures of KwaZulu-Natal.
"In keeping with this idea, the name that was chosen refers to the river that runs through the city," said Chabane.
