Pretoria - Cabinet has called on South Africans to protect the new Metrorail trains against acts of vandalism.

“The new state-of-the-art Metrorail (Peoples’) trains offer unparalleled levels of comfort and service, and will transform commuters’ travelling experience,” Communications Minister Ayanda Dlodlo said on Thursday.

President Jacob Zuma launched the new PRASA trains and train service on Tuesday at the Pretoria Station as part of government’s ongoing commitment to ensure affordable and reliable public transport.

“The new Metrorail (People’s) trains are part of the new fleet that will be rolled out by government over the next 10 to 15 years as part of the Passenger Rail Authority of South Africa's (PRASA) Modernization Programme.

“This initiative will create thousands of sustainable jobs and job opportunities, with the manufacturing plant for the new trains underway in Nigel, Ekurhuleni,” Minister Dlodlo said.

She was briefing the media in Cape Town on the outcomes of a Cabinet meeting.
