Rea Vaya fever hits Soweto

Johannesburg - Visibly excited Soweto residents waved and whistled as the colourful Rea Vaya buses drove through the township on Sunday afternoon.

The City of Johannesburg launched the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system earlier in the day officially making way for the buses to ferry commuters as from Monday.

Motorists hooted and raised their fists as the buses made their way to the Regina Mundi station where Soweto departure BRT station is situated.

Those who could not hide their excitement were seen running behind the buses as they made stops in several stations around the township. However, some were disappointed after they were refused a ride as the buses were already filled by the scores of people who had attended the launch.

Inside, the buses are anything a passenger could dream of in a public transport. From seatbelts to air conditioners and special seats for the disabled people, are just some of the features that make these buses special.
