Probe into allegations at Wynberg Girls High School

Tuesday, November 22, 2016

Pretoria - The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says it is investigating allegations of misconduct and racism at Wynberg Girls High School.

On Monday, learners of the Waterloo Boarding House released a statement to the media and on social networks which contained serious and concerning allegations of racism, discrimination and misconduct.

They alleged that a hostel superintendent touched them inappropriately, offered them condoms without them asking and hurled racial insults at them.

The department said a district official went to the school yesterday afternoon and met with the learners once they had completed their exam.

“The WCED is conducting an investigation into all allegations. In conducting the investigation, the department will also be mindful that the learners are writing their end of year examinations, which will conclude on 28 November 2016,” Education MEC Debbie Schafer said on Tuesday

“We are not able to provide timelines for the investigation as this is a thorough process that will involve interviewing all parties involved.”

The department reminded learners that they can report any serious concerns directly to the department via the Safe Schools hotline on 0800 45 46 47.

“The learners will not be victimised in any way for voicing their concerns. I am informed that the Circuit Manager provided the hostel learners with her mobile number and said they should contact her at any stage,” Schafer said. - SAnews.gov.za
