Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma will on Friday hold a community Presidential Imbizo at Eersterust Sports Ground, in Pretoria, to strengthen the fight against drugs and substance abuse.
The Presidency said the Imbizo will also promote youth development in the Eersterust community and surroundings.
The Presidency said this follows an appeal by the community of Eersterust to the President to intervene in addressing challenges facing the community, in particular drug addiction amongst youth and drug syndicates who operate in the in the community and cause a number of social ills to the detriment of young people and children.
According to the Presidency, the petition by the Eersterust community which listed a number of challenges that confront the community included drug and substance abuse, drug syndicates, high levels of crime and other social ills.
The President has decided to visit the community to personally hear their plight so that he can get a first-hand experience of the situation.
“The Presidential Imbizo enables a direct engagement with the community to equip government with a first-hand understanding of the challenges that are faced by communities, and to intervene meaningfully to improve their lives,” said the Presidency.
President Zuma will be accompanied by Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini, as well as other Ministers and Deputy Ministers, the Premier of Gauteng, MECs and councillors. - SAnews.gov.za
