Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has extended condolences to the family and friends of ANC Women's League Deputy President and former ANC Chief Whip in the National Council of Provinces, Nosipho Dorothy Ntwanambi.

Ntwanambi passed away on Tuesday after being unwell for some time.

"Our country has lost a passionate leader of the people and a seasoned agitator for gender equality. We wish to express, on behalf of government and the people of South Africa, our deepest condolences to her family, friends and comrades. May her soul rest in peace," said President Zuma said on Wednesday.

President Zuma said Ntwanambi was an important part in the quest for a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa, given her role as a dedicated educator, community builder and advocate for women's rights.

Ntwanambi, who was also an ANC executive committee member, had served as a party member for more than 30 years.

She was also founding member of the United Women's Organisation and the Democratic Teachers' Union, the forerunner to the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU). - SAnews.gov.za
