President Zuma to lead Youth Month celebrations

Tuesday, June 9, 2015

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma will lead South Africa's Youth Month celebrations on Tuesday, June 16, at the Tshwane Events Centre, in Pretoria.

On the same day, the President will also officially launch the Mara Mentor, an online youth mentorship programme -- a partnership between the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and the Mara Foundation.

June is celebrated as Youth Month in South Africa, with a specific focus on 16 June, which is also known as Youth Day. Youth Month pays tribute to the school pupils who lost their lives during the 16 June 1976 uprising in Soweto.

Today, the President is hosting the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Youth Working Group meeting, which aims to discuss the National Youth Policy and various issues related to the socio-economic development and empowerment of the youth in the country, at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guesthouse, in Pretoria.

This first Presidential Youth Working Group meeting will bring together government and youth formations to enable the youth to play a part in shaping policy and governance at the highest level.

The youth delegates represent various sectors including professional associations, agriculture, business, education and skills development, religious sector and organisations working in the realm of social development.

Throughout the month of June, Cabinet Ministers and Deputy Ministers will embark on Youth Outreach Programmes across South Africa under the theme "Youth Moving South Africa Forward”. - SAnews.gov.za
