Pretoria - The Gauteng Provincial Government in conjunction with Faith Based Organisations (FBO) will next week convene a prayer session for peace during the forthcoming Local Government Elections.
“We, like all the people of South Africa are looking forward to the 3rd of August municipal election because we too, like everyone else, would be doing all that we can to ensure that everyone in this province is accorded an opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote freely without any fear,” said Gauteng Convenor of FBO and Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza.
MEC Mayathula-Khoza said that prayer is one of the most effective and efficient responses to social scourges such as violent crimes.
“We need to heal as a society as part of the processes of dealing with many of our glaring and stubborn challenges. Faith for instance provides a holistic approach to community safety as it tackles causes of crime from an individual moral and value systems.
“With this prayer, we aim to promote peace building and community development. These noble values are derived from our Constitution, which urges us to heal the divisions of the past and establish a society based on democratic values, social justice and fundamental human rights,” the MEC said.
The prayer session will take place on 14 July 2016 at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Tshwane.
The MEC said that during the prayer session, the sector will be praying that the Creator continues to guide them in building a society based on equality, human rights, prosperity and dignity for all, as well as a society at peace with itself and the world around it.
“With this prayer meeting, we hope to demonstrate that the FBO sector leaders are working together as well as the rest of the society in building the kind of society that is envisaged in our Constitution.
“The prayer is intended to attract all local government structures, all church formations and all political parties’ in the society. It is an act of a united society rejecting violence especially in the light of the recent elections related unrests in Tshwane,” the MEC said. – SAnews.gov.za
